Project Overview

Northern Star Flooring Ltd. was contracted to upgrade the flooring system in the Turbine Hall at Drax Power Station. The project required a durable, high-performance solution capable of withstanding heavy industrial use while providing enhanced safety features. The flooring system needed to support the operational demands of the power station, including resistance to chemicals, heat, and mechanical wear.

Challenges

  • Heavy Industrial Environment: The Turbine Hall experiences constant exposure to high foot traffic, heavy equipment, and operational residues.
  • Safety Considerations: A high level of slip resistance was essential due to the presence of oils and other potential contaminants.
  • Time Constraints: The installation had to be completed within a strict two-week window to minimize disruption to power station operations.

Solution & Implementation

To meet the project requirements, Northern Star Flooring Ltd. selected the Sherwin Williams system:

  1. Surface Preparation: The existing flooring was mechanically prepared to ensure proper adhesion of the new system.
  2. Application of Resuprime OT (Oil Tolerance): A high-performance primer was applied to enhance adhesion and ensure a strong bond to the substrate.
  3. Installation of Resuflor HB: A heavy-duty epoxy floor coating was applied, known for its durability and chemical resistance.
  4. Enhanced Anti-Slip Properties: Aluminium Oxide was incorporated into the system to provide superior slip resistance and improve safety for workers in the Turbine Hall.

Outcome & Benefits

  • Increased Durability: The new flooring system provides long-term resistance against mechanical and chemical wear.
  • Improved Safety: The added Aluminium Oxide enhances traction, reducing the risk of slips and falls.
  • Efficient Installation: The project was completed on schedule, ensuring minimal disruption to power station operations.
  • Aesthetically Improved & Functional Surface: The finished floor provides a clean, professional, and functional workspace that aligns with Drax Power Station’s operational standards.

Conclusion

The successful completion of this project highlights Northern Star Flooring Ltd.’s expertise in delivering high-quality industrial flooring solutions within tight deadlines. By implementing a robust Sherwin Williams system, we ensured that Drax Power Station’s Turbine Hall received a long-lasting, safe, and efficient flooring upgrade that meets the rigorous demands of the power generation industry.
